Telegram statistics and users by country: who counted what

By 12 min read

Short answer. Telegram statistics start with one official number: more than 1 billion monthly active users, announced by founder Pavel Durov in March 2025 and repeated in Telegram's privacy policy. Telegram publishes no breakdown of users by country, age or gender. Every country list online is built from app-download estimates, consumer surveys or advertising reach, and each of those measures something different.

Telegram statistics are easy to find and hard to trust. Search for how many users does Telegram have and the first page returns a dozen roundups, most of them quoting each other, several still carrying the 950 million figure from July 2024 as if it were current. Country tables are worse: the same list shows India with 104 million users on one page and 200 million on the next, with no source on either.

This guide sorts the numbers by who produced them. The headline user count comes from Telegram. The country rankings come from app-intelligence firms and survey panels. The company figures come from financial press reporting on bond documents. Each type answers a different question, and mixing them is how a marketing plan ends up sizing a market from a download count. The sources were checked on 19 October 2026, and anything Telegram itself does not publish is labelled as such.

How many users does Telegram have?

Telegram has more than 1 billion monthly active users. Pavel Durov announced the milestone on his Telegram channel in March 2025, reported by TechCrunch on 19 March 2025, describing the total as "significantly over" 1 billion. Telegram's privacy policy, section 5.2, still says the service "has more than 1 billion users". No newer official count had been published by 19 October 2026.

So how many users are on Telegram today? Officially, the answer remains "more than 1 billion", and the gap since the last announcement is now 19 months, the longest since 2021. Telegram has historically announced round numbers rather than quarterly series, so the silence does not mean the count has stalled; it means nobody outside the company knows the current figure. Pages that state a precise 2026 total, such as 1.1 billion or 1.2 billion, are projecting from the 2025 announcement.

Telegram's own monthly-user announcements
Date announcedMonthly active users
January 2021500 million
June 2022700 million
July 2023800 million
March 2024900 million (Durov to the Financial Times)
July 2024950 million
March 2025More than 1 billion

The March 2025 post also carried two engagement figures, as reported by Kun.uz and Dev.ua: the average user opens Telegram 21 times a day and spends 41 minutes a day in the app. Those are company claims, not audited numbers, and they are averages across a very uneven user base. How many users use Telegram daily is a separate question that Telegram has never answered with an official daily-active figure; a "500 million daily users" number circulates on roundup pages, but this review found no primary statement behind it.

What each Telegram statistic actually measures

Every Telegram statistic belongs to one of five types: monthly active users announced by Telegram, app downloads estimated by intelligence firms, survey reach from consumer panels, advertising reach from platform ad tools, and counters Telegram shows on its own pages. They count different things. A download is not a user, a survey share is not a headcount, and none of the five can be added to another.

The confusion on most roundup pages comes from mixing rows. A page takes India's share of lifetime downloads, multiplies it by the global monthly-user count, and prints the result as "Telegram users in India". That arithmetic assumes every download is still an active account and that every country retains users at the same rate. Neither is true, and the result is a number that looks precise and has no source. The same caution applies to telegram user statistics quoted without a type: before using one, ask which of the five rows it came from. Telegram statistics from the first row are the only ones the company itself stands behind.

Telegram users by country: the list and its sources

Telegram users by country can only be estimated, because Telegram publishes no national figures. The most cited ranking comes from app-download data: Sensor Tower's 2021 analysis put India at about 22% of Telegram's lifetime installs, Russia at about 10% and Indonesia at about 8%. Survey data ranks countries differently, by the share of internet users who say they use the app, which favours smaller markets.

That split explains why no telegram users by country list agrees with another. A ranking by installs rewards population: India tops it because India is large and Android-heavy. A ranking by survey share rewards penetration: Statista's consumer survey, as cited by Backlinko, reported about 45% of Indian respondents using Telegram regularly, 38% in Brazil, 34% in Mexico, 32% in Spain, 16% in Germany and 9% in the United States. Both are real numbers. Neither is a user count.

Searches for telegram users by country 2024, telegram users by country 2025 and telegram users by country 2026 all land on the same underlying data. No firm publishes an annual national series that Telegram has confirmed. Pages labelled with a new year usually reuse the 2021 install shares or the survey percentages with a fresh date in the title. The same goes for telegram user statistics by country and telegram users statistics by country: treat any table without a named source and a measurement type as decoration. If a figure claims telegram active users by country, ask how anyone outside Telegram could count active accounts; only Telegram's servers see that. None of these country figures are Telegram statistics in the strict sense.

Which country is Telegram's biggest market?

India is Telegram's biggest market by downloads and by survey share, and it is the country most sources name for telegram most users by country. Being the biggest by users does not make India the biggest by revenue. Telegram publishes no revenue by country, and its Premium, Stars and advertising income are not broken down geographically in any public document.

The phrase "telegram biggest market" therefore has two answers. By people, India leads, followed in most download rankings by Russia and Indonesia. By money, nobody outside Telegram knows, and estimates that rank countries by Premium spend are vendor guesses. Russia and the CIS region are the most active advertising market by observed ad volume on third-party trackers, but those trackers count creatives seen in monitored channels, not spend. For an advertiser, the useful version of the question is narrower: which language and which channel categories have enough subscribers for a campaign. The guide to what Telegram publishes about ad pricing covers the minimum CPM and how budget maps to views.

Where country counts break: blocks and VPNs

Telegram users by country are least reliable where Telegram is blocked. China has blocked the app since 2015, Iran since 2018, and Vietnam ordered telecom providers to block it in May 2025. People in those countries still use Telegram through VPNs, and download and survey figures either miss them or assign them to the country their VPN exits from.

Iran is the clearest case: Telegram was the dominant messenger there before the 2018 block, and usage continued afterwards through circumvention tools. Any telegram audience by country table that shows Iran near zero is measuring app-store access, not people. Vietnam's order, reported in May 2025, followed a police statement that 68% of about 9,600 Telegram channels and groups reviewed in the country were malicious, citing fraud and drug trafficking. Telegram said it had responded to legal requests. The practical effect for audience sizing is that a channel's own language graph can show a sizeable Persian-speaking or Vietnamese-speaking audience that no national statistic accounts for.

Partial restrictions distort the numbers too. Several governments have limited Telegram for weeks during protests or elections, and Pakistan has blocked it more than once. A download spike after a restriction lifts, or a sudden drop during one, can look like a market trend in a year-on-year chart. When a country ranking moves sharply between years, check for a block before reading it as growth.

Telegram user demographics

Telegram user demographics are not published by Telegram. The company releases no age, gender or income breakdown. The most cited figure comes from DataReportal's October 2023 Statshot, built from advertising-tool data, which put Telegram's audience at about 57% male and 43% female. Age splits on roundup pages come from survey panels and vary widely between sources. The official Telegram statistics stop at the global user count.

Telegram demographics also differ sharply by use case, which a single global split hides. News and crypto channels skew male and younger; local community groups and education channels are more mixed. For anyone sizing a campaign, the platform-wide gender ratio is less useful than the audience of the specific channels in a niche. The crypto groups and bots guide shows how one vertical concentrates on Telegram for reasons that have little to do with the platform average, including the Toncoin-only rule for Mini App payments. A broad demographic figure tells you who Telegram is; it does not tell you who will open your message.

Telegram market share among messaging apps

Telegram market share is roughly one third of WhatsApp's by monthly users. Meta reported more than 3 billion monthly WhatsApp users on its April 2025 earnings call; Tencent reported 1.439 billion combined Weixin and WeChat users at 30 June 2026; Telegram's own figure is just over 1 billion. Those three are the only messengers above a billion that publish counts.

Telegram market share by country is a different picture. In most of Western Europe, the Americas and South Asia, WhatsApp is the default messenger and Telegram is a second app used for channels and groups. DataReportal's Digital 2026 report puts WhatsApp's monthly reach at about 54% of internet users worldwide. Telegram's position is strongest in Russia, the CIS countries, Iran and parts of the Middle East and Africa, where channels act as a news medium. Because people run several messengers at once, market share here is not a zero-sum split: a Telegram user is usually also a WhatsApp user, and the figures overlap rather than add.

Telegram company market cap and revenue

Telegram has no market cap. Telegram Group Inc. is privately held, controlled by Pavel Durov, and its shares do not trade on any exchange. The figures that exist come from bond documents reported by the Financial Times: about $1.4 billion revenue and about $540 million profit in 2024, and about $870 million revenue in the first half of 2025.

Searches for telegram company market cap usually surface the market cap of Toncoin instead. Toncoin is the token of The Open Network, a separate blockchain project; Telegram integrates it for Fragment, ad payments and Mini Apps but does not own it. A Toncoin price chart is not a Telegram valuation. The financial press reported that the same first half of 2025 ended in a net loss of about $222 million after a write-down on Toncoin holdings, while operating profit stayed near $400 million. Telegram raised about $1.5 billion in a May 2025 bond sale, with conversion terms if the company lists. In his March 2025 post, Durov put 2024 profit at $547 million, close to the press figure. Financial Telegram statistics all trace back to those bond documents. Until Telegram lists or prices a funding round publicly, any "Telegram valuation" is an estimate, not a market value.

Telegram usage statistics beyond the user count

Telegram usage statistics that come from Telegram itself are mostly live counters on its own pages. On 19 October 2026, telegram.org/moderation showed 28,084,335 groups and channels blocked in 2026. Telegram's FAQ and blog give product limits, such as groups of up to 200,000 members, and the t.me profiles of official bots show their monthly users.

The rest of the usage picture comes from company statements reported in the press: about 15 million Premium subscribers by 2025, and more than 500 million monthly Mini App users in mid-2024, both quoted from Telegram by trade outlets. Premium revenue was about $223 million in the first half of 2025, per the Financial Times. Counters on Telegram's own bots add context: the official @SpamBot profile listed more than 35 million monthly users in October 2026, which says something about how many accounts deal with limits each month. These counters are the most current Telegram statistics available, because the pages update continuously. Why accounts hit those limits is covered in how Telegram's spam rules catch senders.

One usage statistic does not exist: the number of channels. Telegram has never published a count of public channels or groups, and directory sites that index channels see only the ones they have crawled. Statistics telegram publishes about channels are per-channel, visible to admins, not platform-wide.

Measuring your own Telegram audience by country

Your own Telegram audience can be measured far more precisely than the platform's. Telegram's channel tour says advanced statistics are available for channels with more than 500 subscribers, and the developer reference lists a languages graph among them. Telegram shows subscriber language, not country, so a channel's telegram audience by country has to be inferred from language and time-of-day data.

The statistics panel, documented at core.telegram.org/api/stats, returns growth, followers, mutes, top posting hours, views by source, new followers by source and languages. The languages graph is the closest thing to a country breakdown Telegram offers: Portuguese splits between Brazil and Portugal, Spanish across two dozen countries, English across everywhere. Combining language with the top-hours graph narrows it down; a Spanish audience active at 21:00 UTC is mostly in the Americas. That inference, applied to your own channel, is more useful than any national table. Growing that number without buying it is the subject of growing a channel or group, and the service side is channel growth and promotion work.

Paid reach can be estimated from the Telegram Ad Platform, which shows its own targeting options inside the advertiser account. Third-party ad networks publish country targeting for their own inventory, but those are separate products. Treat third-party telegram audience reports as vendor data, and size a campaign from what the ad account shows.

What Telegram statistics do not exist

Telegram does not publish users by country, daily active users, age or gender splits, channel counts, revenue by region, churn or retention. Every one of those figures, wherever it appears, is an estimate by someone other than Telegram. Saying so is more accurate than quoting the most confident-looking number on a roundup page.

The gaps matter for anyone writing a business case, so before quoting Telegram statistics in a pitch deck, check which kind they are. A pitch deck that says "Telegram has 104 million users in India" cites a number with no traceable source; a deck that says "India accounts for about 22% of Telegram installs, per Sensor Tower's 2021 analysis" cites one that can be checked. The second sentence is less impressive and much harder to challenge. The same rule applies to tools that sell data about Telegram users: a scraper's collection limits explain why member lists exported from groups say nothing reliable about a country's user base, and why their country fields are usually guesses from phone prefixes or names.

When user statistics are the wrong input

Platform-wide Telegram statistics are the wrong input for most Telegram decisions below the level of entering a new market. A billion users does not translate into reachable people: a bot cannot start a conversation, channels reach only subscribers, and Telegram's rules limit messages to people who never opted in. The audience that matters is the one that has already joined you.

That is where the numbers stop helping. Telegram's developer introduction says plainly that "Bots can't start conversations", so a broadcast reaches only those who started the bot or joined the channel. The four broadcast routes and their limits set out what each one can send and to whom, and what the message scheduler accepts covers timing for audiences spread across time zones. Buying reach to match a country statistic is the trap: what SMM panels sell for members and views explains why purchased subscribers inflate a count without adding readers, and what member-adding code can actually call covers the API limits that block bulk adding.

Running several accounts to reach more of a market runs into the same wall; the guide to buying accounts versus running several sets out what Telegram's terms allow. For teams that already have an opted-in audience, the practical work is delivery: Sendhaus runs bulk messaging to opted-in subscribers and builds bot development and automation on the Bot API, and the full list of Telegram services sits alongside the guides on the Sendhaus home page. If Telegram's audience in a target country is small, a different channel will reach those people faster than any Telegram tactic.

Frequently asked questions

How many users does Telegram have?

Telegram has more than 1 billion monthly active users, the figure Pavel Durov announced in March 2025 and that Telegram's privacy policy repeats in section 5.2. No newer official count had been published by October 2026, so precise 2026 totals on roundup pages are projections from that announcement rather than Telegram statistics.

Which country has the most Telegram users?

India. Sensor Tower's 2021 analysis put India at about 22% of Telegram's lifetime installs, ahead of Russia at about 10% and Indonesia at about 8%, and survey data also ranks India first. Telegram itself publishes no users by country, so every national figure is an estimate built from downloads or survey panels.

Does Telegram publish users by country?

No. Telegram publishes a single worldwide monthly-user figure and no national breakdown. Country lists come from app-intelligence firms that estimate downloads, consumer surveys that measure the share of internet users who say they use Telegram, and advertising tools. Each counts something different, so the lists rarely agree.

What is Telegram's market cap?

Telegram has no market cap because Telegram Group Inc. is private and its shares do not trade. The public figures come from bond documents reported by the Financial Times: about $1.4 billion revenue and about $540 million profit in 2024. Toncoin has a market cap, but it is a separate blockchain token, not Telegram equity.

What are Telegram's user demographics?

Telegram does not publish age or gender data. DataReportal's October 2023 Statshot, built from advertising-tool data, put the audience at about 57% male and 43% female. Age splits on roundup pages come from survey panels and differ by source, and demographics vary widely between channel niches such as news, crypto and education.

What is Telegram's market share compared with WhatsApp?

By monthly users, Telegram is about one third of WhatsApp. Meta reported more than 3 billion monthly WhatsApp users in April 2025, against Telegram's just over 1 billion. Most Telegram users also run WhatsApp, so the shares overlap. Telegram is strongest in Russia, the CIS, Iran and parts of the Middle East and Africa.

How many daily active users does Telegram have?

Telegram has not published an official daily-active-user figure. Durov's March 2025 post said the average user opens the app 21 times a day and spends 41 minutes in it. A 500 million daily-user figure circulates on roundup pages, but no primary Telegram statement behind it could be found.

How can I see where my Telegram channel audience is from?

Open the channel's statistics, available for channels with more than 500 subscribers according to Telegram's channel tour. The panel includes a languages graph and top posting hours. Telegram shows language, not country, so combine the language split with the activity hours to infer where subscribers are. That is more precise than any national table.
