Telegram channel comments live in a linked group, so set up the group before the button

By 16 min read

Short answer. Telegram channel comments appear only when a supergroup is linked to the channel as its discussion group. Open the channel, go to Edit or Manage Channel, then Discussion, and pick or create a group. The telegram comment button then appears because each new post is forwarded to that group and pinned, and the replies to that forward are the comment thread under the post. Unlink the group to turn comments off.

Telegram comments are not a separate feature switched on per post. Every comment button sits on top of a group chat that the channel owner links, and every problem people search for, from a missing button to comments that vanish, traces back to that group. This guide follows the setup in order: what has to be true of the group, the linking steps per app, how to post, read and leave comments, how to switch them off for one post or the whole channel, what bots can do inside the thread, and why bought comments are a liability.

Every Telegram detail below was read on Telegram's own pages on 22 October 2026, under the sourcing rule Sendhaus applies to every guide. Menu labels move between app versions; the API behaviour quoted here is what stays fixed.

How Telegram comments work under the hood

Telegram comments are replies inside a linked group. Telegram's API page on discussion groups puts it in one line: "The comment section of a channel post is simply the message thread of the automatically forwarded channel message in the linked discussion supergroup." When the channel publishes, the post is copied into the group and pinned there, and every reply to that copy shows up as a comment under the original.

Telegram added the pieces in two steps. In May 2019 admins could attach a group "to serve as a discussion board", and subscribers saw a Discuss link while "each new post from the channel will be automatically forwarded to and pinned in the discussion group". On 30 September 2020 Telegram added "a comment button to posts on channels with discussion groups", where comments "show up in a cozy little thread of their own, but will also land in the discussion group". The comment counter and the row of small avatars come from a messageReplies object attached to each channel post, which carries the reply total and the last few commenters.

That design explains most of what follows. A telegram channel discussion group is an ordinary supergroup with members, admins, bans and slow mode, and those settings apply to telegram channel comments too. Comments telegram shows under a post are also visible as normal messages in the group, which is why admins moderate them there. And because the thread hangs off the forwarded copy, deleting that copy removes the comment section for that post.

Four things the discussion group needs first

A telegram discussion group can be linked only if it meets four conditions in Telegram's API documentation: it must be a supergroup, not a basic group; its history must be visible to new members; you must be an admin of both chats; and it can serve as discussion group for one channel at a time. Linking fails with a named error when any condition is missing.

  • Supergroup, not basic group. Telegram says basic groups "must be first upgraded to supergroups before they can be set as a discussion group". Current apps upgrade a group when you link it, usually after a confirmation prompt.
  • History visible. The linking method returns MEGAGROUP_PREHISTORY_HIDDEN: "Group with hidden history for new members can't be set as discussion groups." Turn on Chat History for New Members first.
  • Admin in both. Without admin rights the call returns CHAT_ADMIN_REQUIRED, and only groups you administer appear in the picker, since the list comes from channels.getGroupsForDiscussion.
  • A user account, not a bot. The linking method's page says "Only users can use this method", so no bot can set up the link for you.

Public or private does not matter for the link itself. A private group works as the discussion board of a public channel, and people can still comment without joining it, as covered below. For a channel built from scratch, the simplest route is to let the Discussion screen create a new group, which meets all four conditions by default. How a channel and its group grow together, including folders and invite links, is set out in what an invite member bot is allowed to add, which also explains why nobody should be placed in the group without asking.

Enabling Telegram channel comments, app by app

How to enable comments on telegram channel posts: open the channel, open its settings (Edit on mobile, Manage Channel on desktop), tap Discussion, and either pick an existing group or create a new one. Confirm the link. Telegram's own wording from the 2020 announcement is "head to Channel Settings > Discussion". The comment button appears on posts published after that.

The same path answers how to turn on comments in telegram channel settings and how to turn on comments on telegram channel posts; the labels differ slightly between apps, the order does not. That is also how to add comments to telegram channel posts that never had them, and how to create discussion group in telegram from inside the channel without leaving it.

  1. iPhone and Android

Open the channel, tap its name at the top, tap Edit (a pencil icon on Android), then Discussion. Choose a group from the list or tap Create a New Group. Confirm with Link Group; Android asks you to tap the check mark to save.

  2. Telegram Desktop

Open the channel, open the three-dot menu, choose Manage Channel, then Discussion. Pick or create the group and save. Telegram Desktop and the macOS app use the same order with slightly different labels.

  3. Confirm and test

Publish a short post. If the comment button shows with a zero count, the link works. If it does not, check the table in the "not showing" section below before changing anything else.

Readers looking for how to add leave a comment in telegram channel posts, or how to create leave a comment in telegram, mean the same thing: the "Leave a comment" label is what the button reads on a post with no replies yet, and it appears only after these steps. There is no separate "comments" toggle elsewhere in Telegram.

Groups behave a little differently. How to enable comments on telegram group messages has a short answer: a group needs no setup, because any reply in a supergroup starts a thread. Telegram's threads page says it "allows commenting on a channel post or on a generic supergroup message", and that all replies to a message are grouped under its ID. So how to comment on telegram group posts is simply to reply to them; the "N replies" link under a message opens the thread.

Posting with comments on, and switching one post off

How to post on telegram channel with comments switched on needs nothing extra: write and publish as usual, and every new post gets a comment button. Telegram forwards the post to the linked group and pins it there. To switch comments off for one post only, delete the forwarded copy from the discussion group; Telegram's API page says the comment section "can be disabled by removing the auto-forwarded channel post message from the discussion group".

That per-post switch is the main tool for telegram channel post comments that should stay closed, such as an announcement or a legal notice. Delete the copy straight after publishing and the post shows no button. Three side effects are worth knowing:

  • The group fills with pinned posts. Each channel post is pinned in the group. Many admins unpin them in bulk from time to time; unpinning does not close the thread, deleting does.
  • Scheduled posts behave the same. A post sent by Telegram's scheduler is forwarded when it goes out, not when it is queued.
  • Old posts stay as they were. Telegram's documentation describes the forward as happening when a message is sent to the channel, so posts published before you linked the group do not gain a button afterwards.

For bulk posting, the comment section is another reason to keep a steady rhythm. A burst of ten posts drops ten pinned copies into the group at once and splits the conversation. The routes for sending to many people at once, and where a channel fits among them, are compared in six supported routes for bulk messages on Telegram.

Reading and leaving a comment as a subscriber

How to leave a comment in telegram channel posts: tap the comment button under the post (it reads "Leave a comment" when the thread is empty, or shows a count), type in the thread that opens, and send. You do not need to join the discussion group. Telegram's API notes that "a user can comment in channel posts without joining the actual discussion supergroup", unless the admin has switched that off.

The same steps cover how to leave comment on telegram channel posts from desktop: click the comment link under the post and the thread opens in a side panel. A telegram channel leave a comment button that is greyed out or missing means the admin has not linked a group, or that posting there needs membership; both cases are in the next section. Searches for leave a comment telegram channel, telegram leave a comment and leave a comment telegram all land on this same button.

How to see comments on telegram without joining is the same tap: the thread opens read-only for anyone who can see the channel. If someone replies to your comment and you are not in the group, Telegram sends the notice to a special chat called Replies; the 2020 announcement says you "will be notified about replies to your comments via a new chat called Replies". Telegram's API adds that you can block one person from reaching you there with contacts.blockFromReplies.

A comment is public to the channel's audience. Anyone who can open the post can read the thread, and your profile name and photo show next to the comment. A channel's comment thread is not a private line to the admins. Since 2025 channels can also open a separate direct-messages chat, which the Bot API marks with is_direct_messages; that one is private.

How to start discussion in telegram channel threads from the other side is the reverse: as the admin, reply to your own post in the group, or pin a question and ask readers to answer under it. Comments posted by the channel itself appear signed with the channel's name, so readers can tell the owner from everyone else.

Telegram comments not showing: a diagnosis table

Telegram comments not showing almost always has one of six causes: no group is linked, the post was published before the link, the forwarded copy was deleted, the group requires membership to write, the reader is restricted in the group, or the app is too old. Telegram documents each of them; it publishes no figures on how often each one happens.

One cause looks like a bug but is not. A comment that a moderation bot or the group's anti-spam deletes is gone from the telegram comments thread as well, because it was a group message all along. If readers report that their comments disappear, check the group's admin log before anything else.

Another cause sits on the account, not the channel. An account that Telegram has limited for spam may be unable to write in groups it has not joined, and in private chats it may reach only people who saved its number; the rule is explained in the mutual-contacts-only restriction and why it appears. Accounts that post many comments in a short time can also hit the rate errors listed in what each Telegram flood wait error means.

Moderating the thread without closing it

Because telegram channel comments are group messages, every group moderation tool applies to them: admin rights, bans, slow mode, reaction limits, anti-spam and join rules. The 2020 announcement says comments land in the group to "make it easier for admins to keep the conversation civil". The most useful single switch is requiring people to join before they comment.

Join-to-send trades reach for control. With it on, every commenter is a member the admin can see and remove, which cuts drive-by spam. With it off, anyone who can see the channel can reply, which suits a public channel that wants open discussion. Telegram's API notes that with the flag on, "all attempts by non-members to send a message to the group will return a CHAT_GUEST_SEND_FORBIDDEN RPC error". The Aggressive Anti-Spam switch, announced in December 2022 for "groups with over 200 members", catches much of the rest.

A telegram group discussion that grows past a few hundred active members can also be split into topics, which Telegram's FAQ describes as discussions "each with its own chat history, shared media and notification settings". Topics and channel comments do not mix well in one group, so many larger channels keep a plain group for comments and a separate forum group for open talk. Comment activity also shows up in your numbers: replies feed the engagement figures covered in channel analytics and the stats screen.

What a Telegram comment bot can do

A telegram comment bot added to the discussion group as an admin can read every comment, reply in threads, delete spam and post a first comment under each new post. Telegram's bot FAQ says "Bot admins and bots with privacy mode disabled will receive all messages except messages sent by other bots". What no bot can do is link the group, comment as a person, or comment in channels it was not added to.

The Bot API gives a bot the parts it needs. Each forwarded post arrives with is_automatic_forward set: "True, if the message is a channel post that was automatically forwarded to the connected discussion group". Replying to that message places the bot's text in the post's comment thread. The channel and the group point at each other through linked_chat_id. So a telegram comments bot can greet each post with a pinned FAQ link, answer common questions, or remove messages that match a filter.

  • Moderation. Delete links, repeated messages or banned words in comments. This is the most common legitimate telegram comments bot.
  • First comment. Reply to each is_automatic_forward message with sources, a poll or a sign-up link.
  • Answers. Reply to questions in the thread, within the thread only; the bot still cannot message a commenter privately first, because "Bots can't start conversations with users".
  • External comments. In 2019 Telegram's sample @discussbot showed a comments button that opened a web page with login already done; that pattern still works through Login with Telegram.

A telegram auto comment bot sold on freelance sites is usually something else: a set of user accounts, driven through the user API, that post AI-written comments under other people's channels to attract clicks. Telegram's API terms say anyone who uses the API "for flooding, spamming, faking subscriber and view counters of channels, you will be banned forever", and its bot developer terms list "Social growth manipulation" among forbidden uses. Those tools also need several accounts, the subject of running several Telegram accounts versus buying them, and they sign in as a person, which is why message sender tools sorted by what signs in is the better test of any such product. What a bot can and cannot call when it touches membership is in the member-add calls a bot's code can make.

Buying Telegram comments, and what it costs you

Buy telegram comments offers sell replies posted by accounts the seller controls, often AI-written and often from the same pool that sells views and members. In the United States, 16 CFR 465.8 makes it unlawful to buy "fake indicators of social media influence" for a commercial purpose, and the rule's definitions list "comments" by name. Telegram's own terms add account and channel risk on top.

The legal line is specific. Section 465.1 defines indicators of social media influence as metrics "such as followers, friends, connections, subscribers, views, plays, likes, saves, shares, reposts, and comments", and fake indicators as those generated by bots, hijacked accounts or accounts that "do not reflect a real individual's or entity's activities, opinions, findings, or experiences". A paid thread of praise under a product post fits that wording closely.

The Telegram side is less tidy, because Telegram's main terms of service never mention fake comments. The rules sit in other documents: the API terms quoted above, the bot developer terms, and the Content Creator Rewards terms, which treat "simulated or otherwise non-genuine activity" as invalid and allow rewards to be withheld. A channel that earns from ads or rewards therefore puts that income at risk, not only its reputation. Fake threads are also easy to spot: accounts with no photo, replies posted within seconds of the post, and the same phrasing under unrelated posts.

The same economics apply across fake engagement, which is why sellers bundle them. Crypto channels are the heaviest buyers of comment packs, and the pattern is described in crypto groups and the bots that run them. Paid reach that is real exists too: how Telegram Ads place sponsored posts covers the official route, and what a Telegram Ads agency actually sells covers the layer of resellers above it.

Showing Telegram comments on a website

The telegram comments widget, which Telegram calls the Discussion Widget, embeds the comment thread of any public channel post on a web page. Telegram's widget page says "You can embed discussions from any public channel on your website. You only need a link to a post with comments". The page must carry a canonical tag so the widget can match the article to the channel post that links to it.

The telegram discussion widget has two modes. Point it at one post and it shows that post's thread. Point it at the whole channel and it matches each article to the channel post that links it: "Discussions will be available on your website as soon as you post a link into the channel", provided the page has <link rel="canonical" href="%page_url%"> in its header. Options include a comment limit, height, accent colour and a dark theme.

Only public channels work, because the widget loads the thread without a login. For a site with no channel at all, Telegram's widget page points to a separate "basic comments" product that adds Telegram-login comments to any page. Either way the comments stay on Telegram's servers and follow the discussion group's moderation, so a ban in the group also removes that person's comments from the site.

Turning comments off for the whole channel

How to disable comments on telegram channel posts across the board: open the channel's settings, tap Discussion, and choose Unlink Group (Remove Group on some builds). Comment buttons disappear from the channel. The group itself stays, with all its messages, members and pinned forwards, so you can relink it later or keep it as a separate chat.

Unlinking is reversible, deleting the group is not. Before you delete a telegram discussion group, consider what it holds: years of comment threads, the member list of your most engaged readers, and any bots configured there. Relinking the same group later restores the button on new posts, but threads under old posts are not rebuilt; their forwarded copies are still in the group as plain messages.

There are good reasons to close comments: a channel that only posts alerts, a regulated product where public replies create compliance work, or a period of heavy spam. A channel built for reach rather than talk often does better with reactions only. If the channel's purpose is sending to people, not talking with them, the trade-offs are set out in what a bulk messaging service costs.

When comments are the wrong tool

A comment thread works for people who already follow the channel. It is no way to reach anyone else, and dropping links into other channels' telegram comments is the same unsolicited contact that Telegram's spam FAQ describes, judged by whether "the receivers find it unwelcome". Telegram publishes no number of comments that triggers a limit, and any "safe daily comments" figure comes from a tool seller.

The tactics that try to turn comments into outreach are the ones Sendhaus does not run: commenting under rival channels from rotated accounts, scraping commenters to message them later, or adding commenters to other groups. The first two are covered in what Telegram documents about mass DMs; the third in member-adding routes and their limits. Attacks run the other way too: a channel can be flooded with false reports by people it angered in the comments, which whether a mass report bot works looks at in detail. Sendhaus's growth marketing service builds channels, discussion groups and broadcast lists around an audience that asked to be there.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there no comment button on my Telegram channel?

The channel has no linked discussion group, or the post was published before the group was linked. Open the channel settings, tap Discussion and link a supergroup. Posts published after that get a comment button; older posts do not gain one.

Can I comment on a Telegram channel without joining its group?

Usually yes. Telegram lets people comment on channel posts without joining the discussion group, and replies reach them through a chat called Replies. If the admin has turned on join-to-send, non-members can read the thread but must join the group to write.

Can I turn off comments on one Telegram post only?

Yes. Delete the automatically forwarded copy of that post from the discussion group. Telegram's documentation says removing that copy disables the post's comment section, while every other post keeps its comments.

Do Telegram channel comments show who wrote them?

Yes. Each comment shows the author's name and profile photo, or the channel's name when the channel itself replies. Anyone who can see the channel can read the thread, so a comment is never private.

Can a bot link a discussion group to my channel?

No. Telegram's linking method states that only users can use it. A bot can be added to the group afterwards as an admin, where it can read, answer and moderate comments.

Is it legal to buy Telegram comments?

In the United States, the FTC rule at 16 CFR 465.8 bars buying fake indicators of social media influence for a commercial purpose, and its definitions name comments. Telegram's API and bot developer terms also forbid faking counters and social growth manipulation.
