Short answer. A Telegram QR code is a picture of a Telegram link. Scanning it opens a profile, group, channel or bot, joins a chat through an invite link, or, in one dangerous case, logs a new device into your account. You get your own code in Settings, a group or channel code from its info page or Invite Links screen, and any phone camera can scan it.
Every telegram qr code carries one of six link types, and the link decides what happens on scan. That is the part most guides skip: they show where the QR icon sits, then treat every code as the same. This guide starts from what the code opens, then covers how to create, share and scan one for a profile, a group, a channel or a bot, and how admins can tell which printed code brought which members.
Every Telegram detail below was read on Telegram's own pages on 21 October 2026, under the sourcing rule Sendhaus applies to every guide. App menus change between versions, so where a path differs on your phone, the link format underneath it is the part that stays fixed.
What is the use of QR code in Telegram?
A QR code in Telegram turns a chat address into something a phone camera can read, so nobody has to type a username or tap a link. Telegram added the feature in two steps: invite links that "can be converted into a scannable QR Code to put on everything from brochures to billboards" in February 2021, then themed codes for every public username in December 2021.
So the answer to what is the use of qr code in telegram is practical: getting from the physical world, or from another screen, into a Telegram chat in one step. A sticker on a shop counter, a slide at a meetup, a printed menu, a business card or a poster can each point to a profile, a group or a channel. The qr codes telegram generates in the app also work on screens: one person shows a code, the other scans it across the table.
There is a second use that has nothing to do with sharing. Telegram Desktop and Telegram Web show a QR code on their login screen, and a phone that is already signed in scans it to log the new device in. That code is a session key, not an address, and it is the reason this guide treats scanning with some care.
What a Telegram QR code can open: six link types
A Telegram QR code holds a URL, and Telegram's deep-link documentation lists every format that URL can take. Six of them turn up in QR codes: a public username, a chat invite link, a temporary profile link, a bot start link, a username link with draft text, and a login token. Reading which one a code contains tells you what the scan will do before it happens.
| Link inside the code | Format (Telegram API docs) | What scanning does | Expires? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public username | t.me/<username> | Opens a user, public group, public channel or bot | No, until the username changes |
| Chat invite link | t.me/+<hash> (legacy t.me/joinchat/<hash>) | Shows a join screen for a private or public group or channel | Optional: date, use count, or revoked by an admin |
| Temporary profile link | t.me/contact/<token> | Opens a profile that has no username, so it can be added as a contact | Yes, set by the expires field |
| Bot start link | t.me/<bot>?start=<parameter> | Opens the bot and passes a parameter of up to 64 characters | No |
| Username with draft text | t.me/<username>?text=<draft_text> | Opens the chat with a message typed in, ready to send | No |
| Login token | tg://login?token=<token> | Asks your signed-in app to log a new device into your account | Yes, regenerated after each expiry |
The first five are addresses: the worst a scan can do is open a chat you did not want. The sixth is different. Telegram's QR login page says the token must be "scanned and accepted by an already logged-in Telegram app", and accepting it gives the device that showed the code a full session. Any phone camera that previews the URL before opening it shows which of the six you are looking at; a tg://login preview on a code someone sent you is the signal to stop.
How to get Telegram QR code for your own profile
My telegram qr code lives in Settings. Telegram's December 2021 announcement says "A QR code for your own username can be obtained in Settings", and the same post adds a QR icon "next to the username of a person (or from a chat's info page)". Open Settings, tap the QR icon beside your name or username, pick colours and a pattern, then save or share the image.
That is how to find qr code on telegram for any account with a public username. If your account has no username, the code still works, with a catch. In December 2022 Telegram added temporary QR codes: "Users without a username who also hide their phone number from everyone can generate temporary codes that can only be scanned for 5 minutes". Behind that code is a temporary profile link with its own expiry date.
-
Open the QR screen
Go to Settings and tap the QR icon at the top, beside your profile. On some builds it sits next to your username on the profile page itself. Telegram's deep-link list includes a
qr-codesettings link, so the screen is a fixed part of the app rather than a hidden menu. -
Pick a theme
Swipe through the colour and pattern themes. The theme changes only the look; the encoded link is the same
t.me/usernamein every version. -
Share or save it
Tap Share to send the image to another app or save it to your photos. That is how to share telegram qr code images for a business card, an email signature or a printed sign.
A telegram qr code on phone screens can be scanned straight off the display by someone standing next to you, which is the fastest way to swap contacts in person. A code on a desktop monitor works the same way. Several guides note that the profile QR screen is missing from some desktop apps; on those, share the t.me link and turn it into a code with a generator.
How to create QR code for Telegram group or channel
How to create qr code for telegram group chats depends on whether the group is public. A public group or channel has a username, so its info page shows the same QR icon a profile does. A private group or channel has no username, so its code comes from an invite link: open the chat's profile, then Edit, then Invite Links, and tap the menu beside a link to show it as a QR code.
Telegram's February 2021 post gives that path word for word: "tap to open your Group or Channel's Profile > Edit > Invite Links. Tap (⋮) or (⋯) to convert a link to a QR Code." The same steps answer how to get telegram group qr code images and how to make a qr code for telegram channel pages. A telegram channel qr code and a telegram group qr code are built the same way; only the chat type differs.
| What the code points to | Where to create it | Link inside | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your own profile | Settings, QR icon | Username, or a temporary profile link if none | Telegram blog, December 2021; evolution page, December 2022 |
| Another person | Their profile, QR icon next to the username | Username | Telegram blog, December 2021 |
| Public group or channel | Chat info page, QR icon | Username | Telegram blog, December 2021 |
| Private group or channel | Profile, Edit, Invite Links, menu, QR Code | Invite link | Telegram blog, February 2021 |
| Bot | Bot's info page, QR icon | Bot username | Telegram blog, December 2021 |
For a group that admits people through an invite link, the choice of link matters more than the image. A telegram qr code for group posters should come from an additional link with a name, not the primary one, so that revoking it after the event does not break every other place the group is shared. Link types, expiry and use limits are covered in Telegram invite link settings and fixes.
Telegram QR code generator: in-app or third party?
The in-app telegram qr code generator covers profiles, public chats, bots and invite links, and it costs nothing. A third-party generator is useful when you need a code for a link the app does not offer a QR button for, such as a bot start link with a parameter or a username link with draft text, or when a print shop needs SVG instead of a photo.
A telegram qr code generator free online tool takes the t.me link and draws the code. Before using one, check a single thing: whether the code it produces holds your link directly (a "static" code) or holds the tool's own short URL that redirects to your link (a "dynamic" code). Dynamic codes allow scan counting and later edits, but the printed code then depends on that company keeping its redirect running.
- Static code. The image contains
t.me/yourchat. It works for as long as the link does. No account or subscription involved. - Dynamic code. The image contains the generator's URL. If the subscription lapses or the service closes, every printed copy stops working at once.
- Invite link codes. A static code of an invite link already gives per-link join counts inside Telegram (covered below), so a dynamic code adds little for groups and channels.
A telegram group qr code generator site is still just drawing a picture of a link; it has no access to Telegram and cannot make a private group public or create an invite link for you. The same goes for any telegram qr code to link converter: the code carries whatever link you paste, and a wrong paste prints a wrong code. To create telegram qr code images for print, scan each proof with two phones before ordering.
Where to scan QR code in Telegram
Most phones scan a Telegram code with the system camera: point it at the code, tap the link banner, and the phone hands the link to Telegram. Telegram's own feature timeline also lists a built-in QR Code Scanner from January 2025, and its deep-link list includes a qr-code/scan settings link. Login codes for Telegram Desktop and Web are scanned under Settings, Devices, Link Desktop Device.
So there are two answers to where to scan qr code in telegram, and they do different jobs. The phone camera, or the scanner in the app's QR screen, opens address codes: profiles, groups, channels and bots. The Devices screen exists only to accept login codes. Mixing them up is how people get tricked, because a code labelled "verification" can be a login code in disguise.
-
Scan with the phone camera
On iPhone and most Android phones, the camera app reads QR codes and shows the URL. Tap it and the phone opens Telegram at that chat. This is how to scan qr code using telegram links when the app's own scanner is hard to find.
-
Scan inside the app
For a telegram app scan qr code, open the QR screen in Settings and use its scan button where your version shows one. The
qr-code/scandeep link documented by Telegram points to that screen. -
Scan a saved image
If the code arrived as a picture, the phone's photo app can read it: open the image and long-press or tap the scan icon. Telegram's in-app scanner can also read from the gallery on builds that offer it.
Searches for how to scan telegram channel qr code, how to scan telegram group qr code or scan telegram qr code all lead to these steps; the chat type changes nothing about the scan. A telegram qr code scan reads every one of the six link types the same way. What changes is the screen after it, covered next. A qr code scan telegram opens on a desktop needs a phone anyway, since computers rarely have a camera pointed at a poster.
How to join Telegram via QR code
How to join telegram via qr code takes one scan and one tap. A public group or channel code opens the chat, where you tap Join. An invite link code shows a preview with the chat name and member count, then a Join button. If the admin switched on join requests, the button sends a request instead and you wait for approval.
The steps for how to join telegram group with qr code, telegram scan qr code to join group and how to join channel in telegram using qr code are the same: scan, check the preview, tap Join or Request to Join. A telegram qr code join group screen that shows no preview at all usually means the link was revoked or expired. Telegram's invite API carries a request_needed flag per link, so the same group can have one code that admits people at once and another that queues them.
Joining by code gives no extra rights. A member who joined through a printed join telegram group qr code sees exactly what any other member sees, and Telegram's limits on joining many chats in a short time apply the same way; repeated joins can return the errors explained in what each Telegram flood wait error means. Nor does joining hand anyone the member list: what can and cannot be collected from a group is set out in what a Telegram scraper can collect.
How to add contact on Telegram with QR code
How to add someone on telegram with qr code: ask them to open the QR screen in their Settings, scan the code with your camera or Telegram's scanner, and tap Add Contact on the profile that opens. If they have no username and hide their number, they generate a temporary code, which Telegram says "can only be scanned for 5 minutes".
An add friend qr code telegram shows on screen is the same profile code, and a telegram scan qr code to add friend works in both directions: whoever scans adds the other. The scan saves the contact only on the scanner's side. Telegram treats the two sides separately, which matters for messaging: some limited accounts can write only to people who saved them back, the rule explained in why Telegram may only allow messages to mutual contacts.
Behind a temporary code sits a temporary profile link of the form t.me/contact/<token>. Telegram's API says these links "can be generated even for profiles that don't have a username, and they have an expiration date". That is the privacy design: someone can add you at a meetup without learning your phone number and without a permanent public address. Once the code expires, a photo of it is useless.
For teams that meet clients in person, a profile code on a stand or card is the cleanest way to start a conversation that the client opened. Telegram's business tools, including greetings and opening hours on the profile the code points to, are covered in Telegram for Business features and pricing.
Telegram bot QR code and pre-filled messages
A telegram bot qr code opens a chat with the bot, and it can carry more than the address. Telegram's deep-linking documentation says a parameter added as ?start= is passed to the bot on startup; it "can be up to 64 characters long" and may use letters, digits, underscore and hyphen. A different code per table, poster or event lets the bot know where each user came from.
The bot sees the parameter as /start <parameter> the moment the user taps Start. That is the opt-in moment: Telegram's bot documentation is clear that a bot cannot write to a user who never started it, which is why a QR code on a printed flyer is one of the few ways a bot can collect subscribers that it is allowed to message later. What a bot can and cannot do with those users is set out in what an invite member bot can add and in which member-add calls a bot's code can make.
Mini Apps can also read codes. Telegram's bot features page lists "native dialogs for reading QR codes" among Mini App functions, so a bot's web app can open the camera, scan a ticket or a product code, and get the text back without a separate scanner app.
For people rather than bots, a username link can carry draft text: t.me/<username>?text=<draft_text>. A code built from that link opens the chat with a message already typed. That is how to send message in telegram using qr code for a support desk or a booking line: the customer scans and taps Send. Nothing is sent until they tap it. The rest of the messaging basics are in how to send a message on Telegram in DMs, groups and channels.
The login QR code: the one never to scan for someone else
A login QR code is how Telegram Desktop and Telegram Web sign in without a password. The new device shows a code holding a tg://login?token= link; your phone, already signed in, scans it in Settings, Devices, Link Desktop Device and accepts it. Telegram's API documentation says the code "must be scanned and accepted by an already logged-in Telegram app". Scanning someone else's login code gives them your account.
Scammers use exactly that. Bitdefender described a scheme on 28 April 2026 in which a fake "verification" step asks the victim to scan a code that is really an attacker's login session; one scan hands over the account, which then messages the victim's contacts with the same lure. The tell is always the same: a stranger, a support "agent" or a channel asking you to scan a code to confirm, verify or claim something.
tg://login? Is anyone else asking you to scan? If the answer to the first is no, or to either of the others is yes, do not scan. Check Settings, Devices afterwards and end any session you do not recognise.
The same login flow is how many third-party tools sign into a Telegram account: they show a QR code and ask the owner to scan it. That gives the tool a full user session, with every right the account has. Before scanning one, read how such tools differ in message sender tools sorted by what signs in. If an account was taken over through a fake code, Telegram's own report flow is the route; bots that promise to get the scammer banned by volume do not speed it up, as the mass report bot guide explains.
Tracking which printed code brought which members
Telegram counts joins per invite link, which makes a set of telegram qr codes a measurement tool. The February 2021 post says admins "can also see which users joined using each invite link to find out where new members came from or which format has been most effective for growth". One named invite link per poster, flyer or event, each turned into its own code, shows which placement worked.
Telegram's invite API stores what each link has done: usage for joins, requested for pending requests, plus an optional title, expire_date and usage_limit. In the app, the Invite Links screen shows the same counts and the list of people who joined through each link. A telegram link qr code made from a named link therefore reports back without any outside tracking.
| Setting | API field | Use for a printed code |
|---|---|---|
| Link name | title | Label each code by placement, such as "spring flyer" or "booth 4" |
| Joins so far | usage | Compare placements |
| Pending requests | requested | See demand when join requests are on |
| Expiry date | expire_date | Close an event code after the event |
| Use limit | usage_limit | Cap a code handed to a small group |
| Approval needed | request_needed | Screen people who scan a public poster |
Codes bring people who chose to join, which makes them one of the cleaner growth routes Telegram offers; the wider plan is in how to grow a channel or group by the rules, and printed codes sit beside the other routes in Telegram promotion for channels, groups and bots. A pinned welcome post, timed with Telegram's message scheduler for the day a poster goes up, tells new arrivals what they joined. Members who arrive by code also behave differently from bought ones, the subject of what SMM panels sell and what Telegram says.
When a QR code on Telegram does not work
A qr code on telegram fails for a handful of documented reasons: the link behind it was revoked, it expired, it hit its use limit, the username changed, or it was a temporary code past its 5 minutes. Telegram publishes no figures on how often telegram qr codes fail, and no QR scan statistics at all; any scan-rate claim comes from a generator vendor.
- Username changed. A code for
t.me/oldnamestops pointing at your chat the moment you rename it, and can later point at whoever takes the old name. - Invite link revoked or expired. The scan opens a "link expired" notice. Print codes from links you will not need to reset.
- Use limit reached. A capped link stops admitting people once
usagereachesusage_limit. - Private account without username. Only a temporary code works, and only for 5 minutes.
- Reach. A code works only for people who already have Telegram; a QR code is not a way to reach anyone who is not there.
Codes are also one-to-one. Each scan brings one person who chose to come, which is the point, and it is why a QR code is never a substitute for writing to people who did not ask. Telegram's position on unsolicited private messages is set out in what Telegram documents about mass DMs. Sendhaus's growth marketing service plans codes, invite links and broadcast lists around an audience that opted in.
A short list of quick searches maps here too. A qr code for telegram, a qr code for telegram group and a qr code in telegram are all one of the six links in the table at the top; read the link, and the scan holds no surprises.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a QR code scanner inside the Telegram app?
Yes, on current versions. Telegram's feature timeline lists a QR Code Scanner from January 2025, and its deep-link list includes a qr-code/scan settings link. Login codes for Telegram Desktop and Web are scanned separately under Settings, Devices, Link Desktop Device. The phone's own camera also reads Telegram codes.
Do Telegram QR codes expire?
Username codes do not expire while the username stays the same. Invite link codes expire if the admin set a date or use limit, or revoked the link. Temporary profile codes for accounts without a username last 5 minutes, and login codes are regenerated by the app after each expiry.
Can I make a QR code for a private Telegram group?
Yes. Open the group's profile, then Edit, then Invite Links, and use the menu beside a link to show it as a QR code. The code carries the invite link, so it works only while that link is active. Use a separate named link per code so you can revoke one without breaking others.
Can someone see my phone number if they scan my Telegram QR code?
Not from the code itself. A username code opens your profile, and what it shows follows your phone number privacy setting. Accounts that hide their number and have no username get a temporary code that points to a short-lived profile link, so the number stays hidden.
Is it safe to scan a Telegram QR code?
An address code is as safe as tapping a link: it opens a profile, chat or bot. A login code is different. Scanning one under Settings, Devices signs the device that showed it into your account. Never scan a code someone sends you to verify or claim something.
Can a QR code send a Telegram message for me?
It can open a chat with a message already typed, using a t.me link with a text parameter, but nothing is sent until you tap Send. A bot start code passes a parameter of up to 64 characters to the bot when you tap Start.
