Telegram group description, name and username: three fields, three published limits

By 15 min read

Short answer. A Telegram group description and a Telegram channel description share one limit: 0 to 255 characters, per Telegram's Bot API. The title takes 1 to 128 characters, and a public username 5 to 32 characters of a–z, 0–9 and underscores. The description is plain text, shows on the chat's profile and its t.me page, and should say what the chat is, how often it posts and who runs it.

A channel or group owner controls exactly three pieces of text that a stranger reads before joining: the title, the public username behind the t.me link, and the telegram group description (called "description" in the Bot API and "about" in the client API). Most guides treat the three as one writing exercise. They are three separate fields with three separate limits, and each one surfaces in different places. This guide takes each field in turn, with every limit read from Telegram's own documentation on 27 October 2026.

One boundary first. A personal profile bio is a different field with a different limit (70 characters, 140 with Premium), and it is covered in the guide to personal Telegram bios. Everything below is about channels and groups. The sourcing rule behind every number here is the one described on the Sendhaus homepage: a Telegram figure is printed only with a Telegram source beside it.

The three text fields a channel or group owner controls

Every Telegram channel and group has three owner-written text fields: a title of 1 to 128 characters, an optional public username of 5 to 32 characters, and an optional description of up to 255 characters. Telegram's Bot API states the title and description ranges in its setChatTitle and setChatDescription methods, and the client API states the username rules in account.checkUsername.

FieldPublished limitTelegram sourceUnique?
Title (the name)1-128 charactersBot API, setChatTitle: "New chat title, 1-128 characters"No, any number of chats can share a title

Description (about)0-255 charactersBot API, setChatDescription: "New chat description, 0-255 characters"No
Personal bio, for contrast70, or 140 with PremiumAPI config, about_length_limit_default / _premiumNo

The table answers a common mix-up. A Telegram description for a channel allows 255 characters while a personal bio allows 70, so copying a profile bio into a channel or a telegram group description wastes most of the space, and pasting a channel description into a personal bio gets cut. Only one of the three fields is unique across Telegram: the username. Two channels can carry the same title and near-identical descriptions, which is the root of most impersonation covered further down.

What is the Telegram channel description limit?

The Telegram channel description limit is 255 characters, and the same 255 applies to a telegram group description. Telegram's Bot API gives the range as 0 to 255, so an empty description is allowed. A longer text sent through the client API fails with the error CHAT_ABOUT_TOO_LONG, which Telegram's messages.editChatAbout page lists as "Chat about too long."

Two details matter more than the number. First, the description field Telegram stores is plain text. The messages.editChatAbout method takes a single string called about and, unlike the message methods, no list of formatting entities, so bold, italic, spoilers and hidden text links cannot be saved in a channel description. Second, Telegram does not publish how emoji and non-Latin characters are counted against the 255. Apps count them as they type, and an emoji-heavy line can hit the ceiling earlier than the visible length suggests. Write the text in a notes app, paste it in, and check the counter before saving.

Username5–32A–z, 0–9 and underscores. API account.checkUsername.
Public chats10Per non-Premium user, 20 with Premium. API config channels_public_limit.

Apps accept line breaks in the description field, which lets a short text sit on three or four lines. Use them for structure, not decoration: a break is a character too, and it counts toward the 255.

Where the description shows: profile, t.me preview and search

A channel or telegram group description appears in three places: the Info section of the chat's profile inside Telegram, the public t.me page that opens in a browser, and the link preview that page produces when the t.me link is pasted into another app. The title travels with it everywhere. Telegram does not document whether description text affects in-app search ranking.

The t.me page is easy to check. Opening t.me/telegram on 27 October 2026 returned a page whose og:title was the channel title, "Telegram News", and whose og:description was the channel description word for word. That is the text a social network, a messenger or a chat app shows when someone pastes your link. The description Telegram serves to link previews is therefore the first sentence most outsiders will read, often before they open Telegram at all.

Similar channelsShownNot used for selectionNot used: picks are by "similarities in their subscriber bases"
Web search enginesIndexed for public channelsIn the URLPublic channel content "indexed by search engines"

Two claims in that table deserve care. Several vendor guides say Telegram "indexes the group name and description for search". Telegram's own API pages say only that contacts.search finds results by username substring; no published document says description text is matched. Second, the Similar Channels list, per Telegram's api/recommend page, is built from overlapping subscriber bases, not from keywords. A well-worded description helps someone decide after they land on the profile. Nobody can show, from Telegram's documentation, that it brings them to the profile. The paid and free directory routes that do bring visitors are set out in the channel, group and bot promotion guide.

One more surface exists for public channels only. Telegram's channel tour says the contents of public channels "can be seen on the Web without a Telegram account and are indexed by search engines". A private channel has no username, no public page and no preview text for search engines; its description is visible only on the invite screen and inside the app.

A telegram channel link in description works as plain text that the apps turn into a tappable link: full URLs, t.me links and @usernames become clickable when the profile is opened. Because the field stores no formatting entities, a link cannot hide behind other words; the reader sees the raw address. That makes the address itself part of the copy.

The behaviour is observable rather than documented. Telegram publishes no page describing which strings in a description are auto-linked. In current apps, web addresses, t.me/ links, @username mentions and hashtags usually render as links and everything else stays plain text; open the profile on a phone and a desktop after saving to confirm.

  • Link to the companion chat. A channel pointing to its discussion group, or a group pointing to its news channel, is the most useful link a description can carry. Use the @username, which costs fewer characters than a full URL; a telegram group description that names its news channel this way gives members one tap to the announcements.
  • Link to a support bot. A t.me/yourbot?start=desc link opens the bot with a start parameter, which Telegram's bot documentation caps at 64 characters. The parameter tells the bot the user arrived from the description. Bots built that way are the subject of the bots and automation service.
  • Link to an invite link. A t.me/+hash invite link in a public description works, but revoking it later leaves a dead link on the profile. How invite links expire and are reset is covered in the invite link guide.
  • Link to your website. One domain, written short. A reader who sees an unfamiliar domain in a profile has no anchor text to reassure them, so the domain should match the title.
A link in the description is a door, not a message. Nothing in a channel description reaches anyone who did not open the profile. It does not grant permission to message people who joined, and it is not a substitute for opt-in. Telegram's terms open with a ban on using the service "to send spam or scam users", and the difference between a profile link and unsolicited outreach is laid out in the cold DM rules guide.

How to write a description for Telegram channel readers who have not joined

A good description for Telegram channel visitors answers four questions in under 255 characters: what the channel posts, how often, who runs it, and where to go with questions. The reader has not joined yet and sees no posts on the preview, so the description is the only promise they get. Concrete nouns and a posting cadence beat adjectives.

Telegram channel bio ideas found online tend to be slogans, and a slogan answers none of the four questions. The phrase "telegram channel bio" is common in searches, but Telegram's own interface calls the field a description; whichever word you use, the job is the same. A working order:

  1. Topic and audience, in the first clause

"Weekly pricing notes for B2B buyers" tells the reader what and for whom in six words. Put it first: the first line is what a link preview shows most prominently.

  2. Cadence and format

"One post every Tuesday" or "a morning summary at 7:00". Readers deciding whether to join are deciding about notification volume, and a stated cadence answers that.

  3. Who is behind it

A team, a company or a named role. Channels sign posts with the channel name rather than the person, as Telegram's channel FAQ explains, so the description is where accountability lives.

  4. One contact route

An @username for questions, a support bot or a website. One, not four: every extra link dilutes the one you want tapped and eats characters.

A description for Telegram works best when it is checked against the link preview, not only the profile. Paste the t.me link into a chat with yourself and read what appears. If the preview text says nothing a stranger understands, rewrite the first clause. For a business channel, the profile and its description sit alongside Telegram Business features such as greetings and opening hours, covered in Telegram for Business features and pricing.

Telegram channel description example set, with counted lengths

Each telegram channel description example below fits the 255-character limit with room left, uses no formatting the field cannot store, and answers the four questions from the previous section. The names and handles are invented for illustration. Character counts include spaces and were counted for this page; your app's counter may differ for emoji.

The crypto line carries two statements that do real work: "not financial advice" and "we never DM first or ask for funds". Impostor accounts in crypto chats typically message members privately while posing as admins, and a description that says admins never DM first gives members a rule they can check. What Telegram itself documents for token communities, including its Mini App payment rules, is in the crypto Telegram groups guide.

None of the examples promise numbers, rank claims or "the biggest channel". A description that claims a size the counter does not show reads as a warning sign, and a counter padded with bought members carries its own risk: Telegram's API terms state that faking subscriber and view counters leads to a permanent ban, as the guide on bought subscribers documents.

Is a Telegram group description written differently?

Yes. A telegram group description has the same 255-character limit as a channel's, but it describes a conversation rather than a feed. It should say who the group is for, what is on topic, where the rules are, and whether there is a linked channel for announcements. The full rules belong in a pinned post, not in the description field.

The reason is space. A rules list that fits in a 255-character telegram group description is too short to enforce, and a description crammed with rules says nothing about the topic. Point to the pinned rules instead, and write them properly; the structure of a rules post is covered in the Telegram group rules guide, and what new members should see when they arrive is in the welcome message examples.

A telegram group description also does one job a channel description rarely needs: it filters. Telling visitors "no selling outside Friday threads" or "no links without context" before they join cuts the moderation load after. Groups that attract automated posting need more than a sentence, though; how spam accounts and bots behave in groups, and what stops them, is in the guide to Telegram spammer tools and defences. A telegram group description is the fence sign. The anti-spam settings are the fence.

Telegram channel name ideas that survive search and time

The title is the one field every surface shows, so telegram channel name ideas should be judged by how they read in a search result list and a link preview: topic first, brand second, no decoration. Telegram allows 1 to 128 characters, but chat lists and previews cut long titles off, so the words that matter go first.

Searches such as "channel name ideas telegram" or "telegram names ideas" return generator tools that output clever word pairs. Clever is the wrong test. Five patterns that hold up:

Brand + topicNorthfield Tools · Price NotesOwner is clear, so impostors are easier to spot
Place + topicRiverside Transit UpdatesMatches how locals search
Audience + purposeR7 Camera OwnersGroup members recognise themselves
Topic + formatRust Jobs BoardFormat tells readers what a post looks like

Channel name ideas for Telegram also need a test against what already exists. Search the title in Telegram before you commit; if three channels already use it, a reader cannot tell yours apart, and if one of them is a well-known brand, you have built an impersonation problem by accident.

Telegram channel name ideas for business

For telegram channel name ideas for business, use the registered brand name as the first word and a short function label after it: "Northfield Tools Updates", "Northfield Tools Support". Keep the same brand string across the channel, the support group and the bot so customers can match them. Emoji in a business title look like spam in a search list and add nothing a customer searches for.

Telegram group name ideas

Telegram group name ideas follow the audience-plus-purpose pattern more often than channels do, because a group's value is the people in it: "R7 Camera Owners", "Riverside Parents Swap", "Rust Jobs Chat". Add "Chat" or "Group" when a channel with the same brand exists, so the two are never confused in search.

Best Telegram username ideas for a channel or group

The best telegram username ideas are short, match the title, and use only what Telegram accepts: letters A to Z, digits 0 to 9 and underscores, 5 to 32 characters, case-insensitive. The username becomes the t.me link, the @mention and the QR code, so changing it later breaks every printed or shared copy.

Telegram's FAQ adds two details. Usernames are "case-insensitive, but Telegram will store your capitalization preferences", so @NorthfieldTools and @northfieldtools are the same handle but the capitalised form displays and reads better. And no hyphens, dots or spaces exist in a username; an underscore is the only separator.

  • Mirror the title. @northfield_updates for "Northfield Tools Updates". A username that does not match the title makes readers wonder which is real.
  • Skip numbers and filler. @northfield_official2024 dates itself and is what impostors register. "Official" in a handle proves nothing.
  • Check availability early. account.checkUsername and channels.checkUsername return USERNAME_OCCUPIED for a taken handle, and USERNAME_PURCHASE_AVAILABLE when the name is a collectible sold on Fragment.
  • Mind the public-chat cap. Telegram's config sets channels_public_limit_default at 10 public channels or supergroups per non-Premium user and 20 with Premium; past it, setting a username fails with CHANNELS_ADMIN_PUBLIC_TOO_MUCH.

Taken usernames have two routes. Basic usernames are "distributed on a first-come – first-serve basis", and Telegram says it reserves "the right to recall usernames assigned to unused bots and channels, as well as openly squatted usernames", with requests going to @Username_bot. Collectible usernames are different: Telegram "cannot assign collectible usernames"; they are bought and sold on Fragment, and a single channel can have several pointing to it at once.

Collision and impersonation pitfalls

Only the username is unique, so two channels can share a title, a photo and a near-identical description. Impostors rely on that. The defence is consistency: the same brand string in title, username and description, a website that links back to the real t.me address, and a channel or telegram group description that tells members how the real admins behave.

Telegram's FAQ gives one route for the victim: "If a scammer is pretending to be you, please contact @NoToScam." Telegram's terms also show what happens to channels that mislead users; the giveaway clause says such channels "may be terminated or assigned a scam label and removed from Telegram search". The same logic runs the other way. A new channel whose title, username or description borrows a known brand risks that label for itself.

Do not name a channel after a brand you do not run. A title such as "Telegram Support" or a username that imitates a company's handle is impersonation regardless of intent. Telegram publishes no checklist for what it treats as misleading, so the safe line is simple: the name, handle and description describe your own organisation and nothing else.

Descriptions also attract a quieter problem: offers of "description optimisation" bundled with member packages or DM blasts. Those bundles sell the outreach that the description cannot legitimately do. What a real bulk messaging provider charges for, and to whom it can send, is set out in what a mass messaging service costs.

When a better description does not help

A rewritten channel or telegram group description changes how many profile visitors join. It does nothing for a channel that nobody visits. Telegram has no feed that pushes channel profiles to strangers, so traffic has to come from links, folders, advertising, partners and Similar Channels, none of which reads the description to decide whom to show.

Three situations where the fields are not the problem:

  • No inbound traffic. If the profile gets few visits, the description is read by few people. The supported ways to bring members in, and the 200-invite cap on adding people directly, are in how Telegram members adding works.
  • Mismatch between promise and posts. A description that promises weekly analysis on a channel that posts daily reposts loses members after joining. Fix the posting, then the text.
  • Private chats. A private channel's description is seen only by people who already hold an invite link, so it informs rather than persuades.

When the fields are right and the audience is the issue, the work moves to growth and delivery. Sendhaus plans that through its growth marketing programme, sends to opted-in subscribers through broadcast messaging built on Telegram's limits, and lists everything else on the full services page. Who we are and how we work is on the about page, and more field-level guides sit in the Sendhaus guide library.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a Telegram channel description be?

Up to 255 characters. Telegram's Bot API gives the range for setChatDescription as 0 to 255 characters, and the same field and limit apply to groups. A longer text fails with the error CHAT_ABOUT_TOO_LONG. Telegram does not publish how emoji are counted, so check the in-app counter before saving.

Can a Telegram channel description contain links?

Yes, as plain text. Full URLs, t.me links and @usernames in a channel description become tappable in current apps, but the field stores no formatting, so a link cannot hide behind other words. Use one link, usually the companion group, a support bot or your website.

Does a Telegram group description help the group appear in search?

Telegram does not say so. Its API documents that global search finds chats by username substring and shows titles; no Telegram document says description text is matched. The description does appear on the public t.me page and in link previews, where it helps visitors decide to join.

What is the difference between a Telegram channel description and a bio?

A bio belongs to a personal account and is limited to 70 characters, or 140 with Premium, per Telegram's API configuration. A channel or group description belongs to the chat, allows up to 255 characters, and is edited by admins in the chat's profile.

Can two Telegram channels have the same name?

Yes. Titles are not unique, so any number of channels can share one. Only the public username is unique, and it must be 5 to 32 characters of letters, digits and underscores. Match the title, username and description so readers can tell the real channel from copies.

How do I change a description for Telegram channel or group?

Open the chat's profile, tap Edit, and change the Description field; only admins with the right to change chat info can do it. Bots that are admins can set it with the Bot API method setChatDescription. The change shows at once on the profile and on the t.me page.
