Cold DM scripts and DM automation tools, sorted by who writes first

By 18 min read

Short answer. A cold DM is a private message to someone you have no prior contact with, usually a pitch. DM automation is software that sends or answers those messages for you. On Telegram the line is set by who writes first: a bot "can't start conversations with users", and the Spam FAQ treats any unwelcome private message as spam, so automation is safe for replies and opt-in lists, not for cold DM outreach.

Most guides to cold messaging are sold as script packs: 30 or 65 "plug-and-play" openers for $5 to $60 on Gumroad and Whop, with no word on the platform rules that decide whether those openers get read or reported. Guides to DM automation are written by the vendors of the tools. This page puts the two searches side by side, writes original templates for the cases where a first message is invited, and sorts every DM automation tool by what it signs in as and which rule applies to it.

Every Telegram figure below comes from a Telegram page read on 17 October 2026 and named beside the figure, under the sourcing standard behind these guides. Where Telegram publishes nothing, the page says so instead of borrowing a vendor's number. Sendhaus, an independent Telegram messaging studio, has no affiliation with Telegram Messenger Inc.

What is a cold DM?

A cold DM is a direct message sent to a person who has never interacted with the sender, typically to sell, recruit or propose a partnership. What is cold DM in practice depends on the platform: on LinkedIn it is a connection note, on Instagram a message request, and on Telegram a private chat opened from a username. In every case the recipient did not ask for the message.

What is such a message worth, then? The answer rests on one variable: whether the recipient invited contact. A channel admin who writes "for ads, message @name" in the channel description has invited a first message on that topic. A member scraped from someone else's group has not. Cold DM outreach to the first person is a business inquiry; the same text sent to the second is the case Telegram's Spam FAQ describes.

"For private messages, it really doesn't matter what you send, as long as the receivers find it unwelcome. It could have been a photo, an invite link or a simple 'hello'."Telegram Spam FAQ, telegram.org/faq_spam

That sentence is why copywriting advice alone cannot rescue an uninvited message on Telegram. The test is the reader's reaction, not the message's quality. The mechanics of how a one-to-one Telegram message is sent are the same whether the chat is warm or cold; only the recipient's consent differs.

What is mass DM, and how does it differ from a cold DM?

Mass DM means sending the same or a lightly templated private message to many recipients at once, usually through software. What is mass DM in relation to a cold DM? A cold DM describes the relationship (none); a mass DM describes the volume (many). A bulk DM run to strangers is both, and it is the version every platform's spam rules are written against.

The mass dm meaning on Telegram has one extra twist: a Telegram bot cannot send a mass DM to people who never opened it, so every bulk DM to strangers runs on personal accounts. Telegram's Terms of Service list "Use our service to send spam or scam users" among the things users agree not to do. A broadcast from a bot to users who pressed Start, or a post to channel subscribers, is one-to-many messaging without the cold part, and the six supported routes for bulk messages set those out.

Mass messaging outside Telegram follows the same split: SMS and WhatsApp both price and police messages by consent, as the comparison of mass messaging services across channels shows with each owner's published price.

How to cold DM without being reported

How to cold DM well comes down to three choices made before any wording: message only people who published an invitation to contact them, write one message by hand for one reason, and accept silence as an answer. A cold DM strategy built on those choices sends few messages and gets read. A strategy built on volume collects reports, and on Telegram reports limit the sending account.

How to do cold DM on Telegram specifically, step by step:

  1. Find a published contact. Channel descriptions, bot profiles and business pages often name an ads or partnership contact. A username listed for inquiries is an invitation; a username copied from a member list is not.
  2. Check you have a reason that is about them. One sentence that only fits this recipient: their last post, their audience, a gap you noticed.
  3. Write the opener, the reason and one question. No link in the first message. Telegram's Spam FAQ names "an invite link" as one of the things an unwelcome message can contain.
  4. Send it from your real account. An account with a name, a photo and a history reads as a person. The bought or aged accounts sold for outreach read as what they are.
  5. Follow up once, then stop. One polite follow-up after several days; after that, no reply means no.

The best cold DM strategy, by that measure, is the approach that would survive the recipient pressing "Report spam". If the honest answer is that most recipients would press it, the list is wrong, and no opener fixes a wrong list. A sender who gets reported can see the result in the app: "Sorry, you can only send messages to mutual contacts at the moment." The mutual-contacts-only limit explains what that message means and what Telegram says about it.

The best cold DM openers share a pattern: they name the recipient's own work in the first line and ask a question that is easy to answer. "Hey, quick question" with nothing after it is close to the "simple 'hello'" the Spam FAQ uses as its example of an unwelcome message, because it hides the reason. A good opener states the reason before the reader has to ask.

Cold DM script and template examples

A cold DM script is a reusable structure, not a message to paste unchanged: opener tied to the recipient, one-line reason, one question. The examples below are written for this page and labelled as illustrative, not as tested conversion figures. Each one is for a recipient who published a contact for exactly that topic, which is the only case where a first message on Telegram is invited.

Cold DM template 1: ad placement inquiry to a channel admin

"Hi, I saw the ads contact in the description of [channel]. I run [product], a [one-line description] for [audience]. Do you take paid posts in [month], and what is the rate for one post with a link? Happy to send the draft first."Illustrative template, written for this guide

Cold DM template 2: partnership pitch to a bot or tool owner

"Hi, your bot profile lists this account for partnerships. Our [channel] covers [topic] for about [size] readers, and your bot solves [problem] they ask us about. Would a review post plus a referral link work for you, or do you prefer a different setup?"Illustrative template, written for this guide

Cold DM template 3: the single follow-up

"Following up once on the message above about [topic]. If the timing is wrong, no reply needed; I won't write again."Illustrative template, written for this guide

The best cold DM script here is the third one, because it ends the sequence. A cold DM outreach script that runs to five follow-ups turns one invited inquiry into a pattern the recipient can report. The best cold DM template of the three is whichever matches the contact the recipient published; using the partnership pitch on an ads contact gets ignored.

Cold DM examples from paid packs tend to fail the same test: they are written to be sent to hundreds of people, so the opener is generic by design. A search on 17 October 2026 for script packs returned listings promising up to 65 scripts "across every major platform"; none of the listings read mentions a platform rule. Where a template does carry an affiliate link, Telegram's affiliate terms add a rule of their own, forbidding "initiating private chats with random users for the sole purpose of sharing your link"; DM marketing on Telegram and the affiliate terms covers that clause in full.

Cold DM outreach in Alex Hormozi's framework

Searches for cold DM Alex Hormozi refer to the outreach model in his book $100M Leads. Summaries of the book, including Shortform's, describe four lead channels (warm outreach, cold outreach, free content and paid ads) and a "Rule of 100": 100 marketing actions a day for 100 consecutive days, such as 100 cold calls. This guide quotes those secondary summaries, not the book.

Applied to cold DM outreach on Telegram, the volume half of that advice collides with the platform. One hundred unsolicited private messages a day to strangers is the pattern the Spam FAQ describes, and Telegram publishes no safe daily number. The other half travels well: a summary of one of his cold outreach videos stresses personalising each message and giving value upfront, so that cold outreach reads like warm outreach.

On Telegram, the 100 daily actions can be spent where the rules allow: 100 minutes of channel content, ad spend through how Telegram Ads work, or invited inquiries to admins who publish an ads contact. Published Telegram Ads cost figures show what the paid-ads channel of the framework costs on this platform.

DM automation: which tools are allowed to do what

DM automation is software that sends, queues or answers private messages without a person typing each one. A DM automation tool is allowed or risky depending on two things: what it signs in as, and who wrote first. Tools that answer people who messaged first, through an official API, are the compliant kind on every platform. Tools that sign in as your personal account to message strangers are the kind platforms ban.

DM automation tools by what they sign in as, who may be messaged, and the published rule
DM automation app or toolSigns in asWho it may messagePublished rule
Telegram bot (Bot API)Bot tokenUsers who started it"Bots can't start conversations with users." (Bots introduction)
Telegram Business auto repliesYour Premium accountPeople who write inGreeting and away messages; connected bot acts in chats active in the last 24 hours (Bot API)
Instagram / Messenger comment-to-DM toolsMeta business API, via OAuthPeople who commented or messaged"Businesses have up to 24 hours to respond to a user." (Meta Messenger Platform policy)
Userbot mass DM toolYour phone number and login code (MTProto)Anyone, which is the problemAPI misuse for spam: "you will be banned forever" (Telegram, obtaining an API ID)
Browser extension DM botYour logged-in web sessionAnyone the page lets it clickListing claims such as sending "without being banned" are the vendor's, not the platform's

DM automation tools on the compliant side differ mostly in how they start a conversation. On Instagram, vendors describe comment-to-DM as running through Meta-approved partners that connect over Meta's business API; the Messenger Platform policy then gives the business 24 hours to respond, plus a Human Agent tag for manual replies "within a 7-day period". On Telegram the trigger is the Start button or a deep link, and Telegram bot development and automation work is mostly about making that button worth pressing.

An auto DM tool that greets new contacts is also native on Telegram. Every Telegram auto reply option and its documented limit sorts greeting messages, away messages, reply bots and connected bots by trigger. An auto DM automation tool sold for Telegram that asks for a phone number is a userbot, whatever the dashboard calls it; one that asks for a bot token is bound by the Bot API. Message sender tools sorted by what signs in applies that test to the products on the market.

An auto DM bot built on the Bot API also has a pace. Telegram's Bots FAQ advises to "avoid sending more than one message per second" in a single chat, puts bulk notifications at about 30 messages per second, and caps group messages at 20 per minute. Paid broadcasts lift the bulk figure to 1,000 messages per second at 0.1 Stars per message, for bots with at least 100,000 Stars and 100,000 monthly active users. A bot that exceeds the pace receives HTTP 429 with a retry_after value, and flood wait errors and what they mean covers the user-account equivalent.

Free DM automation tools and what they cost elsewhere

DM automation free of charge exists on Telegram itself: creating a bot through @BotFather, sending through the Bot API, scheduling messages and reading channel statistics cost nothing. Greeting and away messages need Telegram Premium, because Telegram Business features ship with Premium. Most other free DM automation tool offers are trials of paid products or free tiers with message caps.

Free DM automation on Telegram: what is free and where the cost sits
Free auto DM tool or featureWhat it does, and the catch
Bot API bot created via @BotFatherReplies and broadcasts to users who started it; free, but hosting and the code are yours
Scheduled messagesQueues a message in any chat you can write to; native and free
Greeting and away messagesAuto replies to people who write in; part of Telegram Business, which needs Premium
Paid broadcastFaster bot broadcasts; 0.1 Stars per message, charged only for messages delivered
Free userbot scriptsFree to download; the cost is the account they run on

A free auto DM tool found through a search for "telegram dm bot free" is usually a script that logs in as a personal account. The download is free; the account is the price. Telegram scheduled messages covers the native queue, and Telegram Business features and their price covers what Premium adds for sellers.

Mass DM bots, senders and services

A mass DM bot, mass DM sender or mass DM tool is software that sends one message to many private chats. On Telegram none of them is a bot in the Bot API sense, because a bot cannot open a chat with a stranger. They are userbots, scripts or browser extensions running on personal accounts, and a mass DM service is the same software run for you on accounts the seller controls.

How to make a mass DM bot is therefore the wrong question on Telegram, and this guide does not give instructions for it. The Bot API has no method that sends to a user who never started the bot. Code that sends from a user account through MTProto falls under Telegram's API page, which says accounts using the API for "flooding, spamming, faking subscriber and view counters of channels" are banned forever. How to mass DM within the rules means building the list first: a channel people subscribe to, or a bot people start.

The same holds outside Telegram. A Discord mass DM project indexed on pkg.go.dev describes itself as a self-bot "primarily used for mass messaging users", and its own README warns that automating user accounts violates Discord's Terms of Service. A bulk DM sender sold as a Chrome extension for Instagram runs on your logged-in session, and the "no ban" promise on the listing belongs to the vendor.

Mass DM services usually price per thousand messages and source the list by scraping. What a Telegram scraper collects and the rule against it covers the list side, member adding routes and their limits and what an invite member bot can do cover the adder side, and how spam bots are built and stopped covers the result. The neighbouring products sold in the same shops, from mass report bots to SMM panels selling members and views and offers to buy Telegram subscribers, rest on the same personal-account model.

Sendhaus does not sell cold DM campaigns, mass DM services, scraped lists or account farms. The reasons are set out on the page about the work Sendhaus declines, and what Telegram documents about mass DM gives the platform side in full.

DM campaigns: strategy, tools and the other DM campaign

A DM campaign is a planned series of private messages to a defined audience, with a goal, a message sequence and a way to measure replies. DM campaigns that work on Telegram send to people who opted in: bot users, business-account contacts, or readers who replied to a channel post. Good DM strategies plan the opt-in before the message, because the opt-in is what Telegram's rules check.

A DM outreach strategy on Telegram has four parts. The entry point is a channel, an ad or a deep link to a bot. The opt-in is the user pressing Start or writing first. The sequence is a few messages spaced to the Bots FAQ pace, which suggests spreading large broadcasts over "8-12 hours". Measurement uses channel statistics, covered in Telegram channel analytics. DM outreach that skips the first two parts is cold outreach at scale, whatever the plan calls it.

A DM campaign builder or DM campaign manager sold for Telegram should map onto that table. If the product's first step is "import usernames", it starts at the cold end. Compliant broadcast work, like broadcast messaging to opted-in subscribers, starts at Reach. The reach side is covered by promoting a channel by the rules, growing a channel's subscribers, what a Telegram ads agency sells and channel growth and marketing work. Niche communities follow the same model, as the guide to crypto groups and bots shows for one heavily spammed vertical.

One search in this cluster means something else entirely. "DM" also stands for Dungeon Master in tabletop games, and a DM campaign notebook is a planning journal for a role-playing campaign: sessions, characters, maps. Searches for a DM campaign builder, DM campaign manager or DM campaign template often want those campaign-planning apps and printables, not messaging software. This guide has not reviewed those products.

When cold DMs and DM automation do not work

Cold outreach and automated messaging fail when the audience never opted in, when the audience is not on the platform, or when local law requires consent first. On Telegram the first case ends in reports and a limited account. The second ends in silence: Telegram's privacy policy cites "more than 1 billion users", but that total says nothing about a given market or niche.

Consent law sits above every platform rule. Article 13 of the EU ePrivacy Directive, 2002/58/EC, requires prior consent for direct marketing by electronic mail, a term the directive defines broadly; whether a given messenger campaign falls inside it is a question for counsel. Platform programmes add their own consent tests: Amazon's Associates Program Policies allow affiliate links in direct messaging only when the message is "solicited (i.e., opted into by the receiving customer)". This is not legal advice.

Automation also fails at the conversation stage. Vendors of comment-to-DM tools concede that scripted bots break when a prospect says something unexpected, and a channel is one-way by design. Replies need a group, a bot or a business inbox, which the four broadcast routes and their published limits compare. An account limited after uninvited messages cannot be fixed by adding accounts: the limit is per account, and Telegram's Spam FAQ says an early release "is impossible".

What Telegram does not publish about cold DMs

Telegram publishes bot limits and the spam definition, and withholds the rest. The pages read for this guide give no daily number of cold DMs that is safe, no schedule for how long a spam limit lasts, and no criteria for lifting one early. Every "safe daily limit" for first messages circulating online, including the 50-per-day figures on extension listings, comes from vendors.

PEER_FLOOD, the error userbot tools show when an account has messaged too many strangers, is absent from Telegram's official error documentation. @SpamBot, the only contact the Spam FAQ names for limited accounts, showed 35,529,898 monthly users on its t.me page in October 2026, which says how many people check their status but nothing about thresholds. Telegram also publishes no reply-rate or conversion figure for any kind of DM.

Star Messages are the one documented price on a message to a stranger. Telegram's FAQ describes them as a fee users can set for "messages from people who are not in their contacts", and the API returns ALLOW_PAYMENT_REQUIRED when a sender has not paid it. Where a recipient has set that fee, an uninvited message has a published price; nowhere else does one exist. Anyone planning outreach can ask for a written read through the full list of Sendhaus services.

Frequently asked questions

What is a cold DM?

A cold DM is a direct message sent to someone who has never interacted with the sender, usually to sell, recruit or propose a partnership. On Telegram the recipient's reaction decides how it is treated: the Spam FAQ says that for private messages it does not matter what you send if the receiver finds it unwelcome.

What is the difference between a cold DM and a mass DM?

A cold DM describes the relationship: the sender and recipient have none. A mass DM describes the volume: one message sent to many private chats through software. A bulk DM run to strangers is both, and on Telegram it can only run on personal accounts, because a bot cannot start a conversation.

Is DM automation allowed on Telegram?

Yes, when it answers or broadcasts to people who opted in. A Bot API bot can message users who started it, and Telegram Business greeting and away messages answer people who write in. Tools that sign in with your phone number to message strangers fall under Telegram's API rule that spam use gets accounts banned forever.

Can a Telegram bot send cold DMs?

No. Telegram's introduction for bot developers says bots can't start conversations with users; a user must add the bot to a group or send it a message first. Anything sold as a Telegram mass DM bot that reaches strangers is a userbot running on personal accounts, not a bot.

What is the best cold DM template?

The best cold DM template names the recipient's own work in the first line, gives one reason for writing and asks one easy question, with no link in the first message. It works best for a recipient who published a contact for that topic, such as a channel's ads contact, and it is followed up once at most.

Is there a free DM automation tool?

On Telegram, yes: a bot created through @BotFather and the Bot API cost nothing, and scheduled messages are native. Greeting and away messages need Telegram Premium. Free userbot scripts for mass DM are free to download, but the account they run on carries the risk of being limited or banned.
